“The Ripple of Choices” by Rev Dr Ray Francis to align with Wesley's Three Simple Rules (R. Job, 2007)
Imagine a small town where everyone knew each other. One day, a young man named Alex noticed that people often complained about how harsh or unkind life seemed, but he realized that most of the pain came from small, everyday choices. So he decided to experiment: every day, he would follow three simple principles.
First, he would do no harm. He stopped gossiping, avoided harsh words, and made sure not to injure anyone emotionally or physically. Second, he would do good—helping neighbors carry groceries, volunteering at the local shelter, and offering encouragement to coworkers. Third, he stayed in love with God, spending time in prayer, attending church, and reading scripture each morning.
Within weeks, Alex noticed something remarkable. People began to smile more at him, neighbors returned his kindness, and the whole atmosphere in the town seemed lighter. He realized that living intentionally with these three simple rules didn’t just change him—it created ripples that touched everyone around him.
Scriptural tie-in: Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Lesson: Just as Alex’s simple choices created positive ripples, the three rules—do no harm, do good, stay in love with God—offer a practical guide for shaping a life that blesses others and honors God.
